DRSS Career Fair

This week at DRSS, we hosted a career fair where various organizations came to the school and talked to students about their school, job, or company.

Starting around 10:15am, the set up for career fair kicked off. Students and teachers helped set up stands for each of the schools and companies that were coming in, signed them in, and helped them set up their materials. Companies ranging from Premier Health to LexisNexis were present at the career fair, giving students a good range of views into different careers.

Starting around 11:00am, the career fair kicked off. High school students filled the hallways and began looking at all the different companies and colleges that were present. Each grade had an assignment that was relevant to their age and future for the fair. For example, the 11th graders had to get two questions answered by a company, and another two questions answered by a college. For both colleges and companies, a student had to come up with their own question so they could get answers to what they’re curious about. Due to the diverse interests from the students, many types of questions were asked by the students. They ranged from “how do I better prepare myself for college?” to “what type of skills would I acquire from your company?” And the presenters were happy to answer each question.

During the fair, many companies explained to the students what it’s like to work at their job, what the work environment is like, what you do during the job, and how to get an internship at their company. Almost all of the engineering companies brought in an example of what they have worked on in the past or are working on right now. For those who were interested in talking to colleges, the colleges explained what their program is like, what they would learn, and if the program was a good match for the student’s future career goals. Many of the colleges pointed the students towards a program in their college that they thought would benefit the student the most. Additionally, the Air Force and Army were there to provide students another option other than college. By the end of the career fair, most students had an idea of what they wanted to look into for their future, where they wanted to go, or had an idea of where they could start off at.

At the end of the day, students and teachers helped the presenters pack up and move things to their cars. Each presenter filled out a survey to help DRSS improve the event for next year. Thanks to the presenters from the career fair, many students now have an idea of where to go for their future.
