Zika Virus: A Brief History

Originating in the Zika forest of Uganda, the Zika virus is nothing new. It was first discovered within monkeys in 1947 when scientists were conducting routine surveillance for yellow fever. The very first recorded human case occurred five years after its discovery, and has been of low concern ever since. So what’s the big deal about Zika virus nowadays? People have become suddenly aware of the disease since May 2015, when “…the Pan American Health Organization issued an alert regarding the first confirmed Zika virus infection in Brazil.” (About Zika Virus Disease, 2016) Since then, cases of Zika virus have been popping up all over South America, with the symptoms including fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes.

Zika virus is transmitted by mosquito, and the number one way to prevent contraction of this disease is to avoid mosquito bites. While we should be wary of this spreading disease, we should also remember to remain level headed and avoid another panic on the level of the Ebola scare. Stay safe and remember to use bug repellant!
