Day of Silence
Dayton Regional STEM School (DRSS) is participated in the Day of silence. This project was planned by Maggie Moreda, Alex T. Smith, and other community alliance club members. The Day of Silence was held all day long, but students were only allowed to be silent in between classes and before and after school. This community alliance day advocated for people being bullied and has been bullied.
According to Pacer, 64 percent of children who were bullied did not report it; only 36 percent reported the bullying. As a school we will stand to raise awareness about bullying that it’s not okay. The day was modeled after the GSLEN’s (Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network) which held its day of silence that Friday as well. The school allowed the DRSS students to remain silent during their free time and lunch time during the school day. However, students who participated were asked to obey the classroom environment and were required to participate in all classroom activities, which meant they could remain silent during class activities. The main purpose of this event to bring awareness to those who have been silence while they were being bullied. Students learned that it’s okay to speak out about being bullied and harmed about individuals and that someone will care for you. Even though not all students participated in day of silence, all were encouraged to listen up for bullying statistics that will be publicize during students lunch.
