DRSS- Watching politics was always interesting to Commissioner Shaw. Last November, he was finally apart of something he enjoyed to watch from the sidelines. He was a member of different community boards, but he never ran for office until last year.
Once he won the election, he focused on helping grow the city of Dayton. On Wednesday, September 7, 2016, Commissioner Shaw of Dayton visited Mrs. Durkee’s eleventh grade government students. The government students are learning more about how elections and party systems work. Just last week, the students listened to Ohio State Representative Niraj Antani speak about the Republican Party values.
On the other hand, Commissioner Shaw is from the Democratic Party and spoke about the Democratic Party platform while explaining his own take on the issues. In his introduction, he admitted he was not always a democrat. When he was in school, he was a part of the Young Republicans. However, once he attended college, his views changed. He started learning more about the world, and his outlooks on politics started to morph.
Not only is he the Commissioner of Dayton, he is a business owner. According to his City of Dayton biography, “Commissioner Shaw is the owner/operator of a 105-year-old textile cleaning business.” Most people believe business owners are on the side of Republicans. However, that is not always the case. The democratic views align more with his views, so he chose to pursue a party that represents him.
During his visit, he went over many different topics, including crimes/drugs. With the recent heroin epidemic affecting major parts of Ohio, Commissioner Shaw spoke about how the Democratic Party believes this epidemic can be broken. Through medical treatment and programs, people can be saved from letting heroin destroy their lives. Before, the way to stop drug use was by placing people in jail if they were on drugs, but that did not stop them from using.
Gloria Campos, a student from Mrs. Durkee’s class, agrees with the Democratic Party’s stance on this issue. Gloria said, “We should be helping people to reach their full potential instead of putting them in jail.” This is just one of the examples of how students viewed the platform of the Democratic Party.
In conclusion, Commissioner Shaw is an example of a businessman/politician who cares about his city and wants the best for the future generation.
