Clown Sightings
Recently, clown sightings have been popping up all over the United States. Claims have said that the clowns are lurking near the woods to try to lure children. There are three main states where clowns are being sighted: Kentucky, North Dakota, and South Dakota. However, this isn’t the first time suspicious clown activity has sparked attention.
According to The Telepath News, “In 2014, police in Agade, France, arrested 14 teenagers who were dressed as clowns, carrying weapons.” They were armed with knives, baseball bats, and pistols. Even though this incident was two years ago and in a different country, history seems to be repeating itself.
Some sources say that the sightings are nothing but pranks, and we have nothing to be worried about. According to Freddie Campion, a writer for the GQ, “Although the level of media coverage would lead you to believe we're on the verge of a full-scale Purge breaking out, if there has been an increased number of clown sightings in the last month, it probably has more to do with people copying what they're seeing on the news than a tri-state collective of sociopathic murder clowns. The only arrests police have made so far have been for hoaxes.”
However, for the people in the general vicinity of the sightings, they are scared. According to Jamie Hill, a woman who posted on Facebook sharing the location of a clown, “I seriously think this clown thing has gotten out of hand and someone is going to get hurt. Please share this so people around London [Kentucky] will know that they are here!”
So, why clowns? Coulrophobia, or the fear of clowns, is prevalent amongst children and adults. According to Coulrophobia Facts, roughly 12% of adults living in the United States suffer from Coulrophobia. Then why would they dress as clowns to lure children in if they strike such fear into people’s heart? It is a question that leaves many puzzled.
Karlie Morrow, a resident of McCreary County in Kentucky, answered a few questions about the clown sightings. When asked what she would say to one of the clowns, she said, “I would tell them how sick they are and how bad they should feel. They have ruined the trick or treat tradition on Halloween night because parents are terrified that their kids will get kidnapped or killed!” Breitta Harden, a parent of a student who attends DRSS, says that the clown sightings wouldn’t stop her kids from going trick or treating, but she would take more precautions.
When Karlie was asked if she had any advice for those living near clown sightings, she said, “I’d tell them not to go outside unless they had somebody with them at all times, and I’d also warn them about bus stops for their kids.” These clown sightings are popping up all over the United States, impacting not just people near the sightings, but also those who are not.
