DRSS's First Pep Rally
October 27th, DRSS had its first ever pep rally for the high schoolers. Even though it was only for one class period and took place in the cafeteria, a lot happened. Music was played, people danced, awards were handed out, and most importantly, students had fun.
ACE nominations were awarded, and the nominees were given small trophies. Each of the grade levels were then looked over to see which one had the most school spirit. The day before, the grade levels were assigned a specific STEM color. The freshmen had blue, sophomores green, juniors yellow, and seniors red. As the announcer for the pep rally excited the audience, members of the pep rally group walked around and looked at each grade level to see which had the most people wearing their color. This ended up being the freshmen, who were a sea of blue in the cafeteria. However, the sophomores had a good turnout as well, including a group of several all wearing matching green T-shirts made especially for the pep rally, and one person even wearing a green wig.
And while the juniors didn’t have as many yellow shirts in the crowd, they showed enthusiasm in other ways. A small group of them came bearing signs that while not dealing with the pep rally itself, were an interesting addition. Each of the signs represented part of a quote from a Spongebob episode: ‘Krusty Krab is Unfair, ‘Mr. Krabs is in there,’ ‘Standing at the Concession,’ ‘Plotting his Oppression.'
However, the real highlight of the pep rally were the games.
A total of six games were played, including: Donut Obstacle Course Relay, Hula Hoop Relay, Human Tic Tac Toe, Velcro Helmet, Q-tip Shooter, and Whipped Cream and Gummy Worms. Each game played had a grade level winner who was award a small trophy.
The Donut Obstacle Course Relay was the first game played, and students had to run through an obstacle course and eat a donut before their teammate did the same. For this game, each grade raced against each other along an obstacle course, with the juniors coming out victorious.
The second game was the Hula Hoop Relay, where students held hands in a line and attempted to get the hula-hoop through the whole line without letting go. In this, the sophomores won. The next game played was Human Tic Tac Toe. Students ran the length of the cafeteria one at a time to where the tic tac toe layout had been taped onto the ground. They sat in open spaces to try to get 3 in a row. In the first round, it was juniors versus seniors, and the juniors won. In the second round the freshmen won, and in the third the juniors won overall.
The next game was Velcro Helmet, where student were put into teams of two. One student wore a Velcro helmet, while the other threw Velcro balls at them. The winner was the pair who had the most Velcro balls stuck to the helmet. The seniors won the first round, but the sophomores won the next two. Afterwards, each grade played Q-tip Shooter. Students, seated in chairs, shot Q-tips through straws at a line of cups. The grade that knocked all of their cups down first won. Not only did the seniors win this game, but the girl representing them knocked down the cup on the first try.
The next and final game involved whipped cream and gummy worms. Students were again put in pairs according to grade level ate through whipped cream pies to pull out as many gummy worms as possible, all while using only their mouths. The grade with the most gummy worms at the end won the game. Once again, the seniors won, leaving one final trophy to be awarded: one for the grade level.
Seniors and sophomores were tied for points, so they faced off in one final Hula Hoop Relay. It was a close game, but the seniors won, winning not only the game, but also a trophy.
Overall, the entire pep rally was a success, much to the relief of the group in charge of planning it. One of the members, Bri Perkins said, “I had a lot of fun planning and participating in the pep rally. Seeing all my fellow classmates enjoying themselves was worth all the stress of planning the pep rally. I hope to have another soon.”
