Should Engineers Pay Less for College Than English Majors?
I strongly disagree with the idea that engineers or anyone who plans to major in a STEM field, should pay less for college. For one, because STEM fields have more job openings, it's much more likely that someone with a STEM degree will find work faster than someone with a liberal arts degree. This also means that people who are engineers will find work more easily to pay off their college debt, compared to someone who has to wait 6 or more months just to find a job.
Second, if costs were lowered for STEM majors, yes, it would push more people towards those fields and fill those job openings, but at what cost for those people? Not everyone wants to be an engineer or chemist, but if the cost is lowered for those majors, they will most likely try for those fields just because it's cheaper even if they have no passion for math or science. Plus, if someone goes into a STEM field just because it costs less, they won't be as likely to try and succeed in their chosen career field because they don't care as much about what they're working for.
Third, a system like this would not be a fair one. Having a degree in journalism is no less important than having a career in computer science, and it's not fair that someone should have to pay more for one degree simply because it has fewer job openings.
In conclusion, I disagree with the idea that engineers should pay less for college than English majors. Not only is it unfair, but it promotes the idea that some degrees are more important than others. Forcing people to pay more for arts degrees would also bring yet another divide among people where there are already enough.
