Oldest Woman In Space


On November 11, 2016, Peggy Whitson blasted off for the International Space Station (ISS) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan for her 3rd time, where during this endeavor she became the oldest woman in space. Peggy Whitson is currently 56 and will celebrate her 57th birthday on the ISS in February. Before her, the oldest woman in space was Barbara Morgan at 55 years old.

Born in Iowa, Peggy Whitson originally was a biochemist for NASA then became an astronaut. Her first time in space was in 2002. Her second time was in 2007 where she became the first woman to command the ISS. She also holds the record for the most time spent in space by a woman.

Peggy will also set more records during her 3rd trip to space. Her mission will last till May of 2017. This will also allow her to surpass the 534 days spent in space record set by Jeff Williams. Peggy Whitson has accomplished many things in her life and will continue to break and set records on her 3rd trip to space.
