Fresh off the Boat: The True American Dream

ABC is a TV network well known for its comedies, one of which is Fresh Off the Boat. Fresh Off the Boat, premiered February 4, 2015 and is currently on its 3rd season. The show is based on a true story about Eddie Huang and his family who move from Washington D.C. to Florida. His parents, Louis and Jessica, are first generation immigrants from China, bringing their Chinese culture to a prominently white community during the late 1990s. Fresh off the Boat is the first American TV show starring an Asian-American family since All American Girl.

Eddie lives with his mother, father, grandmother, and his brothers Emery and Evan. Hudson Yang plays the lead role, Eddie; Randall Park plays his father, Louis; and Constance Wu plays his mother, Jessica. You may recognize Randall Park if you have ever seen The Interview, starring as President Kim.

The first season starts off with them moving from Chinatown in Washington D.C. to Orlando, Florida. Louis Huang, opens up his own restaurant, Cattleman’s Ranch, a true example of the “American Dream.” While their father is working on starting up a new business, Eddie and his two brothers immerse themselves in the American culture: Eddie, struggling at the beginning to make friends at school; Emery, the second oldest, doing well in school and not finding it hard to have a girlfriend; and Evan, immersing himself into the neighborhood community, getting to know the stay-at-home moms.

If you are ever interested in a new comedy, check out Fresh Off the Boat, Tuesdays at 7:00, on ABC and Hulu. It is an amusing show that submerges you into the life of a bilingual family that is trying to fit in, while at the same time not losing their cultural values.
