Frankenstein vs Lab Lit

First, what is Lab Lit? Lab Lit is short for Lab Literature. It is a fictional story which contains multiple scientific or math concepts and/ or terms. The main character in this genre is usually a scientist. You might be wondering what this has to do with a book published in 1818. Well, some might say that Frankenstein is Lab Lit. After examining pieces of Lab Lit and reading the entirety of Frankenstein, I would also agree that it is Lab Lit.

But, what is Frankenstein? Frankenstein is a book about a man, Victor Frankenstein, bringing an inanimate man to life. This man ends up being neglected by Victor, and out of rage kills Victor’s brother, William, and then frames the maid, Justine. The main science in this story is used when Victor brings the monster to life using a lightning bolt. In 1818, Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, read research about how men would do experiments on things such as frog legs near electricity and the frog legs would twitch. Frankenstein is considered Lab Lit because in 1818, this was the science that was being studied. Also, the main character, Victor Frankenstein, was a scientist.

I would highly recommend that everyone read this classic book at least once in their lives. From beginning to end, this book never lost my interest. In the beginning, I thought I was reading the wrong book because it doesn’t start out anything like you think it would.
