DRSS Students Open Up About….. Internships

The Dayton Regional STEM School (DRSS) is unique in many ways, from its project based learning style to offering college credit Chinese. Another thing that sets DRSS apart from most high schools is the fact that it requires all of its students to complete an internship before graduating. With these internships, students work directly with a regional organization to complete a meaningful and relevant project. Some of these projects are things like broadcasting, press releases, or helping to teach in other schools. This project benefits the host organization and allows the student to experience a real-world work environment.

New changes have come with the internship requirement this year, most notably the one stating students must have the internship finished by August of their senior year. Consequently, students who haven’t completed theirs already have been in a rush to either secure or complete their internship by the deadline.

One of the juniors who already completed their internship last summer is Alyssa Jackson. She did her internship at TricomB2B, saying that “I liked doing my internship because the environment was different from the one here at STEM. It was more casual and less stressful.”

Other juniors who haven’t completed theirs are looking forward to them. For example, junior Bri Perkins was one of five students chosen to go to the Bosnia and Herzegovina STEMmersion that doubles as an internship. She says that, “I’m very excited for my internship in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I cannot wait to meet new people, experience new things, and learn more about entrepreneurship and journalism.” Similarly, Lauren Dalton, is also excited for her internship, saying that, “I am anticipating to do my internship during STEMmersion this year. I am looking forward to getting an inside view of what aspects my future career might hold.” All in all, many of the students at DRSS are looking forward to their internships.
